What happens when you combine a Founding Father (“Hamilton”), a serial killer (“American Psycho”), a Liberian war captive (“Eclipsed”), a Salem witch hunt (“The Crucible”), British royalty (King Charles III”) and toss in a touch of the Almighty (“An Act of God”) all on one stage? Theatre’s most prestigious night plays out on the biggest stage of them all at the 70th annual American Theatre Wing’s Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards.
The Tony’s namesake, Antoinette Perry – an actress, director, producer and dynamic wartime leader of the American Theatre Wing – had recently passed when the awards made their official debut at a dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria hotel on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1947.
This year’s production, hosted by Tony Award winner and funny man James Corden, broadcasts live on CBS from the Beacon Theatre in NYC on Sunday, June 12th. With the extraordinarily diverse, historic, record-setting season that this year is, you know this “Girl” will be tuning in!
