If you are going to The Museum of Art and Design to see an exhibition make sure to check out The Artist Studio. Now in it’s 8th year, the Artist Studio Program hosts artist and designers daily in a live studio environment. Artists and designers are selected for four month sessions. Each artist is assigned one day each week to work. Selection is conducted by a committee of eight to twelve Museum staff members and outside professionals in the fields of art, craft and design. Visitors to MAD meet working artists who openly welcome questions and dialogue, and discuss their processes to the public. The program serves as an innovative model of interactivity and engagement that benefits local artists and Museum visitors through observation, making, and discussion of the creative process.
On a recent Tuesday at the Museum Margaret Braun was the artist working in the studio. Braun’s medium is sugar. During her time at MAD she has been designing, creating and executing an installation of 2,000 hand-sewn sugar cups produced through a variety of techniques from molding sugar to painting decorations in gold leaf.
