Similar to shuffleboard on ice, curling was popular in New York City in the 1800’s and was played on frozen ponds and lakes throughout the city. The sport involving ice, brooms and stones originated in Medieval Scotland and continues to enthrall Canadians. Now, you too can start sweeping away, maybe even join a league at LeFrak Center Lakeside in Prospect Park.
It is not a hard game to get started in, I speak from experience having recently taken up the sport. You can get on the ice and learn how to throw some stones and play a game your first time out. The game has some funny lingo, from “bonspiel” (tournament) to “burning the stone” ( touching the stone with the broom is a no-no). In a nutshell, the teams with four players each take turns sliding a 40 pound stone across the ice toward the “house”, a target in the center.
Lakeside rink has two upcoming clinics for the beginner. January 4-February 7th and February 8th- March 20th. These clinics are a great way to get your first exposure to the sport of curling. Their certified instructors will teach you how to play, rules and strategy. One of the five week sessions qualifies you to join a league. Then who knows?? You might be on your way to Olympic glory! If nothing else, it’s a great workout!
