Ok, this is an obvious NY holiday experience but I couldn’t write about all that is going on without mentioning  NYCB’s, the most enchanting Nutcracker of all! Tschaikovsky’s iconic score transports you to a world of wonder where mischievious mice are foiled by toy soldiers who come to life and a blizzard of ballerinas reveal the enchanting Land of Sweets. George Balanchine’s Nutcracker has been a favorite of New Yorkers since 1954. All 90 dancers, 62 musicians, 32 stagehands and two casts of 50 young students from School of American Ballet join forces to make each performance magical.

Fishs Eddy is one of those shops that I can’t walk past without going inside. The sign in front reads “We Do Dishes” – do they ever!

In this 30-year-old Union Square emporium, sky-high piles of dishes and glasses compete for your attention. If you can’t find what you are looking for here, I can’t imagine where else you would find it. The store is owned by a husband and wife team who started the business by filling the store with dead stock found in the basements of restaurant supply shops in the Bowery and dishes from American manufacturers going out of business. Over time they started developing their own product, working with overseas factories to replicate the heavy gauge dinnerware they are famous for. What makes this store so unique is the sheer delight of wandering around this whimsically museum-like repository of all things dishes. The variety is unparalleled, featuring from traditional, novelty, collectables and of course my favorite the “New York Skyline” Collection.

November 21st-January 18th

Enchanting model trains navigate their way through a whimsical landscape featuring over 150 iconic landmarks. With loving attention to detail, each scene is recreated from Mother Nature, incorporating bark, leaves and other natural materials- all under the twinkling glow of the New York Botanical Gardens Conservatory. Locomotives hum along familiar sights such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty, and Rockefeller Center on nearly a half mile track. This years’ exhibit features 3,000 square feet of additional exhibition space, making room for dozens of new trains, bridges and tracks. Be sure to check out the captivating short film of the show’s behind- the -scenes magic.

The Train Show is painstakenly created by artist Paul Busse. Paul finds his inspiration in the woods that surround his Alexandria, Kentucky home. What the average person may see as just a piece of bark or fallen berry, Paul envisions and recasts as stone on theBrooklyn Bridge or an ornament on St. Patricks Cathedral.

While you’re planning your visit, check out The Gardens’ “Bar Car Nights” – festive evenings (adults only) where you can pick up a complementary cocktail, beer or glass of wine as you explore the conservatory after dark before heading outside for more seasonal fun including live music,ice sculpting and fire performances.

December 13th 3:30 pm

Hundreds of tenor and bass tuba players will congregate on The Rink at Rockefeller Center, to play Christmas carols and other crowd favorites. Tubists of all ages and all across the country will line up under the famous Christmas tree and fill the plaza with the organ-line sound of low brass. Spectators are encouraged to sing along. Conducted by Chris Wilhjelm.

An annual tradition, the delightfully decorated Origami Holiday Tree has marked the start of the holiday season at the Museum for more than 40 years. This years theme is mighty and microscopic life. Volunteers begin folding in March to complete the hundreds of creations that will be displayed on the tree. During the season knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to teach visitors the art of origami folding.

Gather around the 32-foot-high, gold colored, 4,000 pound steel holiday icon at Grand Army Plaza (59th Street and Fifth Avenue across from the Plaza Hotel) to kick off the annual Jewish Festival of Lights. Every evening during the holiday a candle will be lit.

They have books on the role of rice in art, cooking on a boat, cooking for children, 365 fish drawings and of course any ethnic food you could possibly dream of. Kitchen Arts & Letters is a New York City bookstore specializing in food and drink. Travel back in time with an authentic magic-lantern show! Before the movies, magic lantern shows entertained audiences with projected color images, stories, live music and audience participation. Celebrate this holiday season with a magic lantern performance that features Hans Christian Anderson’s famous Christmas story, “The Little Match Girl”, and holiday carols like “O Holy Night”. The American-Magic Lantern Theater is the only professional traveling theater company of it’s kind in the United States, and uses original antique projection equipment.
