Open Plan is an experimental five-part exhibition using the Whitney Museum of American Art’s dramatic fifth floor as a single open gallery. Pianist Cecil Taylor is one of America’s most innovative musicians. A pioneer of free jazz whose work draws on a myriad of different musical styles conveyed through improvisation will take up residence on the fifth-floor gallery along with friends and fellow performers. This residency will feature a series of live performances amid a retrospective environment that will include documentation of Taylor’s career, including videos, audio, photography and poetry.

After 12 years of planning, designing and construction, the World Transportation Hub is now open. Like a bird in flight, this 8,000 square-foot structure is New York’s newest eye candy. Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava this four-billion-dollar structure is now the third largest train station in New York City and the most expensive in the world. Sandwiched between One World Trade Center and St. Paul’s Chapel, the hub is a stop for the Path rail system and the 1, A, C and R subway lines.

4th annual 9/11 Memorial Run/Walk and Community Day. The route begins at Pier 26 and will follow along Battery Park City, with views of One World Trade Center. Following the Run/Walk, participants are welcome to attend the Community Day on Greenwich Street, adjacent to the 9/11 Memorial. There will be food trucks, music and activities. All proceeds help fund the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

The New York City Ballet returns to Lincoln Center for six weeks in spring with a slew of breathtaking performances. The season features plenty of favorites from Balanchine and Robbins, some more contemporary works and, on May 4th, the Spring Gala, highlighted by a world premiere from former resident choreographer Christopher Wheeldon.

Human Interest: Portraits from the Whitney’s Collection offers new perspectives on one of art’s oldest genres. Drawn entirely from the Museum’s holdings, the more than 100 works on view reveal how artists have reinvented portraiture during the last sixty years. Bringing iconic works together with lesser-known examples and recent acquisitions in a range of mediums, the exhibition unfolds in five thematic sections on the floor.
