No visit to DUMBO would be complete without a spin on Jane’s Carousel, a 1922 merry-go-round that was moved from Ohio and completely restored. It’s 48 beautiful horses prance near the East River year-round. Located in the Brooklyn Bridge Park, Jane’s Carousel is housed in a gorgeous glass pavilion.
OY OR YO? BROOKLYN BRIDGE SCULPTURE
You can’t miss this eight foot tall aluminum sculpture sitting at the foot of the Manhattan Bridge. Brooklyn-based artist Deborah Kass brings a bit of word play to her native borough with OY/YO, her first monumental sculpture. “YO” refers both to the Spanish “I am” as well as an homage to urban and Brooklyn slang, while “OY” is a common Yiddish word expressing woe or annoyance. People viewing it from the waterfront will read it as “YO”, while visitors entering the park will see an “OY”. Kass sees both sides as equally important, reflecting the cultural melting pot that is New York. The sculpture will be on display in the Brooklyn Bridge Park through August.
