June … the sights, the scents, the sounds … the sheer possibility!

In my hometown you have endless choices, from the whimsical kickoff to summer that is the annual Mermaid Parade at Coney Island to the wondrous rainbow celebration of Gay Pride Week.  Perhaps you’d rather step back in time to a more refined – though certainly robust era – celebration at Governor’s Island with the annual Jazz Age Lawn Party.  Then of course there’s Shakespeare and the Philharmonic Orchestra live in Central Park.  It’s all here in my madcap, magical backyard that is New York City.

Whatever you do, do it with spirit and style.  After all… it’s the ever jumping, jubilant, jovial month of JUNE.

A mere 13 miles from the island of Manhattan lies another, perhaps more mythical island named “Coney”.  Located on the Atlantic Ocean in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn, Coney Island is a peninsula residential neighborhood as well as a beach, leisure and entertainment destination.

There’s something here for everyone – historians will delight in the last vestiges of old New York with Sideshows by the Seashore, thrill seekers will be satiated by the likes of The Cyclone, Sling Shot and The Thunderbolt, while those seeking more gastronomic pleasures will delight in the plethora of restaurants and food stands on and around the boardwalk.

NYC’s newest celebrity doesn’t go by any clever moniker, isn’t the progeny of a reality show family nor does he have his own posse of press and talent agents.  Only 16 years young and weighing in at a svelte 17 lbs., meet heart throb Henry – the Tortoise!

He’s a social man about town and is especially fond of the ladies.  It all started with a post on Craigslist by Henry’s owner, seeking a loving companion to take him on his much-coveted walks thru Central Park.  The responses came pouring in from around the world and with it, major media attention.  Henry has now become an astute player in the ‘ole paparazzi game.  Recently spotted at a twilight picnic in the park in his honor, no amount of flashbulbs or attention could keep this stud muffin from enjoying the spoils of his new-found fame.  Next time you happen to be strolling through the park and do a double take upon seeing what looks to be a huge shell in a stroller, more than likely you’ve just had a celebrity (tortoise) spotting!
